In finance, the term "strike" refers to a predetermined price at which an underlying asset can be bought or sold, depending on the option type. It is a crucial component of options contracts, such as call and put options, and plays a significant role in determining the profitability and risk associated with these financial instruments.
For a call option, the strike price is the price at which the underlying asset can be purchased within a specific timeframe. The buyer of a call option hopes that the price of the asset will rise above the strike price, enabling them to profit from buying the asset at a lower cost and selling it at a higher market price.
For example, suppose an investor purchases a call option with a strike price of $100 on a stock that is currently trading at $90. If the stock price rises above $100 before the option expires, the investor can exercise the option and buy the stock at the predetermined strike price, even if the market price is higher. This allows the investor to benefit from the price appreciation.
On the other hand, for a put option, the strike price is the price at which the underlying asset can be sold within a specific timeframe. The buyer of a put option expects the price of the asset to fall below the strike price, enabling them to profit from selling the asset at a higher price through the option contract.
Continuing with the same example, if an investor purchases a put option with a strike price of $100 on a stock trading at $110, they can exercise the option and sell the stock at $100, even if the market price drops further. This protects the investor from potential losses in case the stock price declines significantly.
The strike price is an essential factor in determining the value of an option. The relationship between the strike price and the market price of the underlying asset directly influences the option's intrinsic value and its potential profitability. The larger the difference between the strike price and the market price, the higher the potential gains for the option holder.
Furthermore, the strike price also affects the option's risk. If the strike price is close to the market price, the option is considered to be "at the money," and it carries a higher risk because it may not have enough time to move in a profitable direction. On the other hand, if the strike price is significantly far from the market price, the option is considered "out of the money" and carries a lower risk but offers less profit potential.
Understanding the concept of strike price is crucial for investors and traders participating in options markets. By grasping the meaning of strike price and its implications on options contracts, individuals can make informed investment decisions and effectively manage their risk.
Thank you for taking the time to read this article. We hope it has provided you with a clear understanding of the meaning of "strike" in finance and its significance in options trading.

A struck B表示“A打B一下”,而A struck at B表示“A做出打B的动作”,不一定打到B;英美人都用on strike来表示“罢工”,但美国人更习惯说on a strike。
词义辨析:
be on strike, go (out) on strike这两个短语的意义有所差别,用法也有所区别:前者通常译为“在罢工”,指一种状态,可与表示一段时间的状语连用; 后者往往译为“开始〔举行〕罢工”,强调一个动作的发生,不与表示一段时间的状语连用。
